Justice & Peace Group
"We are called to preach this mission of the Gospel, this Good News of the mission of Christ to liberate humankind. Right at the heart of this preaching lies the work we must do for justice."
Justice in the World. World Synod of Bishops, 1971
"Working for peace and justice is central to the mission of the Church."
Cardinal Basil Hume
A concern for, and being active in, justice and peace is an essential part of the Christian life. It is living the Gospel. From the Bible to today's Church teachings we are encouraged to do whatever possible for justice by:
"being aware of the reality of injustice, suffering and violence in our world"
Prayer for Justice and Peace
Heavenly Father,
We praise and thank you for the gift of your Son,
Jesus Christ
Who is our peace and our reconciliation.
We bring before you all those who are suffering because of violence,
war or injustice
We pray for all who experience hunger, poverty and homelessness.
We ask your blessing on our Diocesan Commission for Justice and Peace,
Give us wisdom, courage and discernment,
as we pray and work together.
We bring before you the terrible conflicts that scar our world
and cry out for resolution and lasting peace.
We bring before you the unjust structures that keep millions in poverty
while ensuring prosperity for the few.
In a special way, we bring to you the need for justice
in that part of our country which is the diocese of Southwark.
We pray for an end to unfairness and discrimination
and ask that we ourselves may be granted a spirit of repentance and conversion.
May our diocese manifest that communion with God,
and between men and women,
which is the sign of your Kingdom in the world.
Amen

"being aware of the reality of injustice, suffering and violence in our world"
- exploring the causes of injustice
- increasing awareness among others about these issues
- considering this in the light of our faith
- working for justice on our doorsteps and overseas
- living out our faith and promoting action for justice and peace
- how we live - personal witness
- praying for the situations of injustice that they may be changed
- raising money to help those working to change unjust structures
