September is a new beginning for many people. Children will have new classes, new schools and new teachers. Young people will be starting secondary school, university or maybe a new job. Some people are leaving home for the first time. Some people are doing their driving test. For everyone it’s a new challenge. Sometimes there are setbacks and disappointments because grades were not so good. Sometimes there are high expectations which generate high levels of stress and pressure. In all these transitions we need to make time to hear the voice of the Good Shepherd. We will not hear if we do not listen. So in all the moments of indecisive panic and wonder, we should pray for the courage to stop and reflect. Jesus is present, walking beside us on the journey. Discernment is an extraordinary gift but sometimes it needs coaching, guidance and encouragement. We are not on our own. Family and friends are immediate point of reference and sometimes we overlook the value of their collective wisdom.
